After Jacob's death his body was embalmed and he was carried back to Hebron, where he was buried in the family tomb, the Cave of Machpelah (Gen. 50:1-13). After much recrimination and reproach directed against Jacob, Laban is at length pacified, and taking an affectionate farewell of his daughters, returns to his home in Padanaram. Genesis 37: Jacob and His Brothers. But here we are told that the possession of such gods was much more common in the camp of Jacob than by just Rachel. The land of Moriah --On "one of the mountains" in this district took place the sacrifice of Isaac. 2 Chronicles 3:1 - Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in mount Moriah, where [the LORD] appeared unto David his father, in the place that David had prepared in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.Genesis 22:2 - And he said, Take now thy son, thine only [son] Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. The Lord changed Jacob's name to Israel and he became the father of 12 sons who became the 12 tribes of Israel (Gen. 25-50). Beersheba. The tope was levelled by Solomon, and immense walls were built around it from the base to enlarge the level surface for the temple area. Laban was outraged and pursued them to Mizpah, the Lord intervened for Jacob and in Mizpah Laban made a treaty of peace with Jacob (Gen. 31:1-55). Jacob arrives at Shechem in c.1691BC (see Genesis 12:6-7 . Jacob had to be aware of the presence of the foreign gods in his camp. He is persuaded to accept Jacob's gifts. 1. Eusebius, Onomasticon places it 12 Roman miles from Jerusalem, on the road to Neapolis. A second passage is even more striking. And the king arose to meet her, bowed before her, and sat on his throne; then he had a throne set for the kings mother, and she sat on his right. In the troubled times when there was no king in Israel, it was to Bethel that the people went up in their distress to ask counsel of God. The vicinity was long the favorite camping-ground of the patriarchs. According to the first, the well was dug by Abraham, and the name given to Judah, Jos 15:28 and then to Simeon, Jos 19:2; 1Ch 4:28 In the often-quoted "from Dan even unto Beersheba," Jud 20:1 it represents the southern boundary of Canaan, as Dan the northern. But reconciliation with God and the renewal at Bethel necessitated the reconciliation described in verses 27-29. But because Shechem is a place of conflict and covenant, it's also where choices are made. Answer Succoth (or Sukkoth) is first mentioned in the Bible in Genesis 33:17. In one part of the modern city is a great mosque, which is built over the grave of Machpelah. 24:24, 25; 2 Chr. After Jacob left Laban and met and dealt with Esau, he had journeyed on to Succoth, staying there long enough to build homesor more properly boothsfor his family and livestock. Jehovah's vision to David in the same spot, before the preparation for building the temple there, revived the name Moriah (2 Samuel 24:16; 2 Samuel 24:24-25.) (See Joshua 21:11; Judges 1:10.) And so this chapter not only describes the way back for Jacob, but it also outlines the way back for any believer who has grown cold and indifferent by failing to walk in the path which God has made clear. Later a troubling situation came about, the slaughter of the Shechemites by Jacob's sons, and this forced Jacob to move southward (Gen. 34:1-30). In the first great revolt 1 Chronicles 12:38 - All these men of war, that could keep rank, came with a perfect heart to Hebron, to make David king over all Israel: and all the rest also of Israel [were] of one heart to make David king.2 Samuel 4:8 - And they brought the head of Ishbosheth unto David to Hebron, and said to the king, Behold the head of Ishbosheth the son of Saul thine enemy, which sought thy life; and the LORD hath avenged my lord the king this day of Saul, and of his seed.2 Samuel 3:19 - And Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin: and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and that seemed good to the whole house of Benjamin.1 Chronicles 29:27 - And the time that he reigned over Israel [was] forty years; seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three [years] reigned he in Jerusalem.2 Samuel 5:5 - In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.1 Kings 2:11 - And the days that David reigned over Israel [were] forty years: seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem.Joshua 10:39 - And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed all the souls that [were] therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, so he did to Debir, and to the king thereof; as he had done also to Libnah, and to her king.2 Samuel 3:20 - So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. These wells are in constant use today. And Isaac breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people, an old man of ripe age; and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him (Genesis 35:27-29). The final event of the chapter seems to have been inevitablethe reconciliation of Jacob, his father Isaac, and his brother Esau: And Jacob come to his father Isaac at Mamre of Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned. No doubt Deborah was one to whom Jacob felt very attached, especially if he knew that his mother had died. Part of the explanation for this is the fact that many foreigners had been added to Jacobs household. She had been praying for a child of her own to give to Jacob because she was not able to conceive. The valley runs from north to south; and the main quarter of the town, surmounted by the lofty walls of the venerable Haram, lies partly on the eastern slope. On re-opening it, Isaac gave it the same name (Gen. 26:31-33). God does not, like many of us do as parents, yell and holler, fuss and fume, over the disobedience of His children. He would be fruitful and would become a nation and a company of nations, and the land promised Abraham would be his and his descendants. He had also built an altar at Shechem (33:20), so there must have been some kind of religious observance there. Laban was angry when he heard that Jacob had set out on his journey, and pursued after him, overtaking him in seven days. Verse 9 brushes aside ten years as though they did not exist. 1. And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He had spoken with him, a pillar of stone, and he poured out a libation on it; he also poured oil on it. Oak.
